The current political and administrative setup has been blatantly inept, failed to restore political and economic stability, and has squandered the economic momentum secured under Sheikh Hasina's watch. Rather than delivering its core promises, the regime continuously dehumanises those who subscribe to the ethos of freedom, a tendency that puts the regime in the camp of the collaborators of 1971. Notably, Bangladesh Jamaati Islami, which abetted Pakistani forces in their grisly atrocities, has consolidated itself as the core actor in the current political settlement, which is a travesty to the core principles of the liberation war that created the country. Also, the economy has gone downhill, and the policymakers are more concerned with blame games. In such context, the current conditions in Bangladesh warrant global attention, and countries in the region cannot risk the instabilities brewing in Bangladesh, since it has far-reaching effects on the overall security of the region. We urge the international community to take this into account and design effective measures to restore democracy and orderly political processes in Bangladesh.
